Good things come to those who wait...
Our feet are generally taken for granted. We don’t notice them until something goes wrong and we suddenly have to find a professional to take a look. While a typical nail bar might give you a quick pedicure and add a splash of varnish, a Podiatrist/ Chiropodist is trained to provide the health care your feet really need.
This service invloves highly trained medical practitioners trained in treating injuries and other afflictions with the feet and lower limbs.
Foot problems currently affect over half of the population. Prevention, assessment, diagnosis and treatment require expert care. Don’t underestimate the importance of healthy feet! Foot deformities, infections and injuries not only limit your mobility, but can detrimentally affect your knees, hips, and other parts of the body.
This service is a new concept that uses microwave energy to treat verrucae in a very controlled and precise way. Treatment takes up to 10 seconds per verruca and there are no anaesthetic or dressings required, which means you can continue your everyday activities immediately.
The microwave energy is delivered directly to the verruca at a predetermined depth. This means that, unlike other treatments, there is no damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. It heats the skin by around 4 degrees, targeting the water molecules and destroying the infected viral cells.
This service is a new treatment in the UK and is a Class 2A Healthcare Product, which should only be used by a qualified medical professional.
Verrutop in a unique combination of three organic acids, namely lactic, acetic and oxalic which are combined with copper and zinc salts (accelerants) plus nitric acid to produce “Nitic Zinc Complex”. This Complex triggers and accelerates two keys processes, Desiccation and Denaturation. Verrutop is not a caustic agent, instead its combination acts together to produce nitrites, which denature viral proteins and desiccate the verruca, leaving intact epithelium behind as if the verruca had not been there.
This service is the revolutionary low-level laser therapy bringing new hope to people suffering from the painful, discoloured and disfigured toenails associated with onychomycosis, or nail fungus. Unlike other treatments, Lunula Laser® promises no pain, no risk and no downtime and is the easy, convenient way to experience healthy, clear nails again.
The Lunula delivers a combination of two very low power lasers simultaneously at very specific wavelengths to the surface of your feet. The lasers generate a rotating beam and can cover a large area of the foot to completely treat infections within the nails and nail bed.
The treatment will last for 12 minutes per foot and is pain free, the lasers are not harmful to you in any way as they use very low power settings. The initial four to six treatments will be carried out at intervals of one.
What is an ingrown toenail?
An ingrowing toenail develops when the sides of the toenail grow into the surrounding skin. The nail curls and pierces the skin, which becomes red, swollen, and tender which can become infected.
What does the Procedure Involve?
On the day of the procedure, you can carry on with your normal routine, including eating and drinking and taking any medications (unless you are told not to), but it is important to give yourself some downtime after the procedure, put your feet up and take it easy for the rest of that day.
To begin, the toe is made completely numb with a local anaesthetic, when the toe is completely numb (and we always check!), an antiseptic solution will be applied to your toe to minimise the chance of infection. The offending nail or piece of the nail will then be removed.
A chemical solution (phenol) is then applied to stop the nail from regrowing.
A protective dressing will be applied, and the operation is complete. The whole procedure is over and done within 45 minutes-1 hour (for 1 toe).
You will need to keep this dressing on, and dry for 48 hours.
A follow-up appointment will be arranged with you so I can assess your toe after a week.
When to see our Podiatrist/ Chiropodist?
It’s not normally recommended to wait until you’re experiencing pain to have this treatment. Visiting regularly – as you would with a dentist – can help to ensure that your feet are in top condition, and will help to prevent future problems.
Think about giving your feet the MOT they deserve!
New patient podiatry appointments at Formula health Clinic are an hour long, giving our podiatrist a chance you get to know you, as well as your feet! This initial new patient appointment is essential for assessing your feet, identifying any underlying conditions or issues you are facing, and formulating a treatment plan. Exactly how your initial appointment pans out will depend on what brought you to us.
From Joli our Podiatrist:
“As a podiatrist, I help clients with a wide range of conditions and ailments that affect their feet. To begin with, I may discuss your medical history and any current medication with you. Accurate information will help me to ascertain any causes of your issue and effectively treat it. Once I have gathered all the relevant information, I will assess your feet thoroughly, this will start with a visual assessment of the skin and nails, followed by a vascular assessment to check the circulation in your feet, as well as a few tests to check your nerves are functioning well.
The initial appointment also includes basic nail and skin care. I will ensure your nails are properly cut and filed, as well as reducing nail thickness if required, and the removal of any hard skin, as well as offering general advice on foot maintenance.
The weight-bearing parts of your feet may be prone to corns, due to the high pressure experienced in these areas. While some corns don’t cause any real issue, others can be incredibly painful. Even if your corn isn’t causing you any pain, it’s a sign of a pressure induced problem that needs addressing. Likewise, calluses can be uncomfortable and unsightly, these thick yellow patches of skin on our feet not only look bad, but they can also be very painful. Usually found in the areas of your foot being exposed to an excessive amount of friction pressure. Corns and calluses are easily dealt with at your initial appointment.
From your initial foot assessment, I can also diagnose other common conditions including verruca, ingrowing toenails, and fungal infections of the nail and skin. If any of these are discovered we can discuss treatment plans, some of which can be started immediately at your first appointment if required.”
Our Podiatrist/ Chiropodist is skilled in the treatment of all kinds of foot problems, and can deal with a wide range of issues – from nail-cutting to surgeries. Some of the most common problems are:
Corns and Calluses
These are hard or thick areas of skin on the foot. Whilst they’re generally not serious, they can cause significant pain and discomfort when you walk. This service can remove these corns and calluses, allowing you to walk more freely.
Fungal Infections
Fungal infections, including athlete’s foot, can cause rashes which itch, sting and burn. It’s infectious and often recurs if it isn’t treated properly. Our Podiatrist/ Chiropodist Joli will not only treat the infection, but will also investigate the cause to ensure that it’s less likely to come back.
Verrucas
Verrucas are often likened to ‘standing on a needle’. They can be very painful and are infectious. However, they can take a long time to go and over-the-counter medications often make no difference.
If you have any further questions ahead of booking your appointment with Joli, you can even arrange a free 15 minute discovery call. These can be booked online or by contacting the Formula Health clinic.
