HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

This leading medical treatment harnesses the power of oxygen to promote healing, recovery, and overall health. By delivering 100% pure oxygen in a mildly pressurised environment, HBOT stimulates the body’s natural healing processes, helping address a wide range of health conditions and improving overall well-being.

Historically, HBOT was first used to treat decompression sickness, commonly known as ‘the bends,’ a condition that affects divers who ascend too quickly from deep water. HBOT helps dissolve the dangerous nitrogen bubbles that these divers experience and prevents tissue damage and alleviates symptoms. Over time, the use of HBOT has expanded beyond diving-related conditions to encompass a wide range of medical and wellness applications.

Understanding Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

HBOT increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood, enhancing oxygen delivery to tissues, including the brain. This elevated oxygenation has a wide range of health benefits including; promoting healing, reducing inflammation and supporting neurogenesis (the formation of new neurons).

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy offers a unique pathway to healing and wellness. Whether you’re recovering from surgery, seeking relief from chronic fatigue, or simply aiming to optimise your health, HBOT could be the solution you’ve been searching for. What To Expect

  • Pre-Screening Questionnaire: Before your first session, you’ll be asked to complete a pre-screening questionnaire to ensure it is safe for you to use the HBOT chamber.
  • Preparation: You will be prodived with your own brand new oxygen mask (you will keep this and use for future sessions). Sit comfortably in the recliner armchair inside the hyperbaric chamber, wearing loose, non-restrictive clothing.
  • Closure: Three zips will be closed (with your assistance) and the chamber will be secure. There are multiple windows in the chamber so that you can be monitored periodically throughout your session and you will be able to speak easily with the operator.
  • Pressurisation: The chamber will gradually pressurise to a level higher than normal atmospheric pressure, typically to 1.3 – 1.5x the pressure of the surrounding atmosphere. During your HBOT session, the chamber’s pressure is monitored by a dial. This pressure gauge is visible to the user inside the chamber and the operator externally. During the inflation period you will need to equalise your ears, similar to flying on an aeroplane, or when scuba diving. This can be done by holding your nose and breathing out gently, sometimes wiggling your jaw can be helpful too. If you experience discomfort at any point the operator (and the user inside) can slowly release some of the pressure by slightly opening the main valve.
  • Breathing Oxygen: After reaching the desired pressure, the oxygen concentrator strips and filters the atmospheric air to deliver oxygen to you for the therapy at around 95% via the mask provided, at a rate of approximately 10 litres per minute. The increased pressure during therapy allows more oxygen to dissolve into the bloodstream, enhancing its ability to be delivered at higher rates and more effectively to tissues throughout the body. Relax and breath normally during the therapy.
  • Duration: Each session typically lasts between 60-90 minutes. During this time you can relax whilst listening to music or reading a book from the Formula Health Wellbeing Library. You may take electrical devices such as mobile phones into the chamber but portable chargers are NOT permitted due to safety reasons.
  • Depressurising: When your session is complete, the operator will slowly depressurise the chamber, during this time you will need to equalise your ears similar to during the inflation period. The operator will monitor you throughout this time and will release the air from the chamber slowly, ensuring your comfort throughout.
  • Post-Session: You will likely feel refreshed and energised after the session, although the majority of the long-term health benefits will require ongoing, regular HBOT sessions.

Important safety instructions

Please ensure that you do not:

  • Do not open the zips when the chamber is pressurised.
  • Do not take in naked flames or any highly flammable materials.
  • DO NOT take portable charging devices into the chamber (although unseen, these cause a spark when connected to electronic devices)
  • Implanted devices such as pace makers, MUST be pressure tested by manufacturer. DO NOT enter chamber unless this is confirmed in writing from manufacturer.
  • Do not block the valves from inside, or take in items that may become trapped in the valves e.g. scarfs.
  • Do not attempt to exit the chamber when it is pressurised – you must always depressurise slowly using the release valve first.

Are there any risks of HBOT?
  • Oxygen toxicity is highly unlikely in a mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT) chamber, particularly one operating at pressures up to 1.5 ATA, as this is typically below the threshold where oxygen toxicity becomes a concern. However, if oxygen toxicity were to occur, it would most likely present as central nervous system toxicity.
Symptoms may include visual disturbances (such as tunnel vision), ringing in the ears (tinnitus), nausea, facial twitching, changes in behaviour (such as irritability, anxiety, or confusion), and dizziness. You will be monitored throughout your HBOT session to ensure you are feeling relaxed and well.
  • It is important to note that the risk of oxygen toxicity is minimal in mHBOT, and the therapy is generally considered safe when conducted properly under appropriate pressure levels.
Which conditions is HBOT NOT suitable for?
  • Untreated Pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
  • Severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Recent Ear Surgery or Ear Disease
  • Pregnancy (especially during the first trimester)
  • History of Seizures (Epilepsy)
  • Active Cancer (in certain cases – unless with written authorisation from your Doctor)
  • Severe Heart Conditions (e.g., Congestive Heart Failure, Unstable Angina)
  • Implanted devices such as pace makers, MUST be pressure tested by manufacturer. DO NOT enter chamber unless this is confirmed in writing from manufacturer.
  • Uncontrolled Diabetes
  • Alcohol or Drug Intoxication
  • Claustrophobia
  • Tracheostomy

Always consult with a healthcare provider to assess individual risk factors before undergoing or offering HBOT.

Is HBOT Safe?

Yes, HBOT is a safe and non-invasive treatment when administered by trained professionals. Each session is closely monitored to ensure your comfort and safety.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your condition and health goals. Some people may benefit from just a few sessions, while others may require a more extended course.

Are There Any Side Effects?

HBOT is generally well-tolerated. Mild side effects such as ear discomfort due to the pressure changes, or light-headedness or a mild headache post-session due to the improved oxygen circulation are rare and only temporary. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Formula Health team.
