One of my roles within my motorsport career has been leading a department that sought to take F1 technology and principles and apply them within Sport & Medical industries. I’ve always been passionate about running these sorts of projects whilst being in the unique position of working with some of the world’s most advanced engineering and being able to take that knowledge back into medicine and improve health and fitness outcomes that will benefit a wide range of patients and athletes.

I first came across Kymira and their ground-breaking infrared fibre technology in 2016 and was immediately impressed by the way they had been able to recycle the by-product of movement to enhance capillary vasodilation, re-harvesting a physiological waste product, in essence discovering a form of biological renewable energy and making it accessible to athletes and patients through clothing.

The use of Far-infrared (FIR) has been shown to have beneficial effects at a cellular level (causing nitric oxide to dissociate from the active site of cytochrome-C oxidase in mitochondria), allowing for increased ATP (energy) production. Combined with the improved circulation and oxygenation levels of the blood, this technology can enhance tissue repair, provide a faster replenishment of energy both during and after exercise and even provide pain suppressant effects and reduce the impact of DOMS. This has far reaching potential both in the clinical and sporting environment.

This was exactly the sort of innovative product I’d been looking for with regards to supporting the performance and recovery of drivers, pitcrew and engineers in a non-invasive, passive manner whilst working in a range of challenging environments. Away from the track and back in my clinical practice, this clothing provides an additional layer of rehabilitation and recovery for my athletes and patients between treatment appointments.

I look forward to working closely with Kymira to assist with the development of their embedded fibre technologies for other exciting capabilities for human performance insights and enabling informed gains.
